Increasing excess is risky

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

It has been suggested that the people searching for cheap car insurance quotes should make sure they can afford the excess in the event of an accident. The British Insurance Broker’s Association (Biba) said the recession had seen more motorists looking for ways to cut the cost of their cover.

It stated one way to do this was to increase the excess on a policy, but warned this could be risky. The group admitted savings of £50 to £80 which can seem tempting. However, it added the move may prove to be false economy in the event of a collision.

Technical and Corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill commented that “In the long run people do have claims, that’s why insurers exist and some people are going to find a hefty bill if they are going for a big excess”.

Research by Biba recently revealed 16% of brokers have experienced personal lines customers increasing excess since the beginning of the recession.

Potholes causing people to drive dangerously

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

A new research has suggested that the motorists could be jeopardising their cheap car insurance premiums by swerving to avoid potholes. A study by Kwik-Fit found that almost one third of the drivers have been forced to take evasive action during the past two months that could have endangered themselves and other road users.

Indeed, one in five of those questioned admitted swerving towards oncoming vehicles. According to Kwik- Fit, this risky behaviour is understandable as 6.2 million Brit’s cars have sustained damage caused by uneven surfaces over the course of the past 12 months.

Customer Services Director, David White said that “Potholes are like the mines of the road with motorists doing whatever they can to dodge them”.

Drivers who are worried that they may have damaged their vehicle by hitting a pothole may find taking it for a service to check it is in good working order will reduce their chances of being involved in accidents and also makes them eligible for cheap car insurance quotes in the coming days.

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Recent figures have suggested that the recession may not have had a significant effect on the number of people searching for car insurance quotes for Alfa Romeo models. Statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed the manufacturer enjoyed a boost to its new UK auto sales in both March and April.

The Italian marque put this success down in part to the introduction of its Alfa Mi To model. It claimed the vehicle has managed to bring the brand to wider audience.  During April, the group’s new sales increased by about 76.8% improving the results of every other manufacturer by at least 55%. To put this in the main perspective, UK registrations as a whole country are at present down 28.5% year on year.
